NEWSTEAD ABBEY Priory converted to country mansion, home of poet Lord Byron with many of his possessions and manuscripts on display. Beautiful parkland, lakes and gardens.
HARDWICK HALL The hall seems to be more glass than stone, with massive windows stretching almost from floor to ceiling in every room on every floor. The building of the present Hardwick Hall was commenced in 1591, about a hundred yards away from the first hall, which is now called the Old Hall, dating from around 1586, which was never completed and still stands tall and in ruins close by.
CHATSWORTH HOUSE The "Palace in the Peak" Derbyshire, home of the Duke of Devonshire, built in late 16th century by Elizabeth Hardwick, known as "Bess of Hardwick" and her 2nd husband William Cavendish. There are outstanding painted ceilings, a library of over 17,000 volumes, old master paintings, a collection of neo-classical sculpture and 'Capability' Brown's exceptionally fine garden.
HADDON HALL One of the finest Medieval and Tudor Houses in England, home to the Manners family. Famous for its Rose Garden.
SHERWOOD FOREST Visitor Centre and Robin Hood exhibition. 450 acres of ancient oak woodland associated with the outlaw and his Merry Men, including the Major Oak
RUFFORD ABBEY Parkland, lake and gallery with fine crafts, around ruin of Cistercian abbey.
CLUMBER PARK Landscaped parkland, with double avenue of limes, lake, chapel. One of the Dukeries' estates, though the house no longer remains.
SOUTHWELL MINSTER Norman nave, unvaulted, fine early English choir. Decorated pulpitum, 6 canopied stalls, fine misericords. Octagonal Chapter House. Ruined Bishops' Palace.
LINCOLN CATHEDRAL Built mainly in three periods: Norman (1075-1092), Early English (1191-1250 then 1256-1300).
NOTTINGHAM Nottingham Castle Museum Collections of ceramics, glass and silver. Alabaster carvings.
